The architectural lighting of the facade of the Moon Church was realized in 2016 alongside the Black Eagle palace’s facade, Moskovits Palace‘s facade, the bridge and the cliff on the Crișul Repede river. This whole complex of buildings has a unitary character even during the night. The building, also known as the Dormition Cathedral, is a monument of the city of Oradea, Romania. The construction was completed in 1790, being from the beginning a Christian-Orthodox church.

Architecture

The Church with the Moon belongs to the late baroque, with neo-classical decorative elements. Among them are the capitals with Ionic volutes, the triumphal arch arches that highlight the windows, the triangular pediment, the two mirror panels, the oculus with the globe of the Moon, etc. The two monumental vessels at the ends are of Empire inspiration.
The peculiarity of this place of worship is the spire’s mechanism that indicates the moon phases created by Georg Rueppe in 1793.

The architectural lighting of the facade of the Moon Church

Facade lighting is today part of the building’s architecture. It helps highlight the features of the building and complements the aesthetics and identity of the place.
For this facade, the concept consisted in creating a play of light and shadow. The lighting of the negative space was chosen in particular, such as stained glass windows, niches, the triangular pediment, etc. At the same time, through the lighting, we emphasized the verticality of the architecture. This whole concept meant the predominant use of accent lighting. We also highlighted the mechanism formed by the clock and the moon in the church tower, thanks to which the church is called so today. We didn’t want to leave the eclectic metal helmet with Byzantine accents in the dark, either.

Luminaires

In this project, we used linear Galaxy family fittings with different photometric curves: narrow, medium, and wide. As for the light temperature, we chose a CCT value of 3000K to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This shade does not blur the chromaticity of the facade at all, as a cold light would, for example.
For the lighting of this facade, exclusively LED technology was used, which brings certain advantages such as long life and low energy consumption, being eco-friendly. There was no need to equip lighting devices with high power. Thus, small casings were used, being easily unnoticeable. We do not want to influence the overall appearance of the facade during the day with visible and disturbing casings.
