The architectural lighting project of the Ferdinand bridge in the centre of the city of Oradea, Romania, took place together with the implementation of the lighting of several objectives and monuments in this city such as the Black Eagle Palace, the Moskovits Palace, the Moon Church, etc.
The Ferdinand Bridge, located above the Crișul Repede river, used to connect Unirii Square from New Town to the Olosig neighbourhood, and today Unirii Square with Ferdinand Square. After the construction of several wooden bridges that were destroyed by various floods, it was decided in 1892 to build a metal bridge. But even this bridge no longer exists today because, for strategic reasons, the German troops blew up the bridge in 1944. This fact again blocked all traffic in the centre of Oradea.
In 2013, problems were found in the resistance structure. Then the local administration decided to rehabilitate and strengthen it. It has four balconies from which locals and tourists can admire both Crișul Repede and the city centre. It was also then that it was decided to implement the architectural lighting that would highlight the characteristics of this bridge. This rehabilitation project took place in 2015-2016. Ornaments such as the stylized tulip, a landmark floral motif of Art Nouveau/Secession architecture in Oradea, were mounted on the new bridge equipped with massive stone balustrades.
The construction of the reinforced concrete bridge began before 1954. The carriageway is 20 meters wide, with a 3-meter wide sidewalk on each side. Trams also travel over this bridge, the bridge is provided with a line for this means of transport. In total, the bridge measures a length of 57.7 meters.
For this project, the same style found in the historic centre has been preserved. A warm light temperature of 3000K was chosen. We wanted to highlight the length of the bridge through the continuous light on the horizontal plane and to highlight the specific architectural elements, such as the niches and the coat of arms of the city. Galaxy and Linea lighting fixtures were used to implement the architectural lighting project on the Ferdinand bridge. These lighting fixtures are fitted with LEDs, which brings many benefits to the local council, such as low maintenance and energy costs.
