Exterior lighting for a chalet can greatly enhance its aesthetics, safety and functionality. Whether we’re talking about creating a comfortable ambience, showcasing architectural features or improving security, there are some key considerations to keep in mind. Below we will talk about the challenges of this project, the lighting of the Roots Manor, a chalet, recently opened in the area.
After discussions with the client who proposed this chalet lighting project, we made the following decisions. Given that on the upper floors, the chalet has bedrooms and apartments, we tried to reduce the light that could be perceived through the windows as much as possible. Thus, in the upper part, the light intensity is lower. We only insisted on accentuating certain details specific to this chalet, such as the tall tree trunks and the wood texture on the walls.
For the ground floor, we intensified the lighting effect, highlighting the particularities of the cottage. We took advantage of these roots suspended in the air to create some interesting shadows on the floor to introduce the customers to a more magical atmosphere. The entrance is the brightest point of the facade to guide the customer. Also, specific routes are made with the help of light. For example, under the 3 suspended roots, a lighting fixture with elliptical optics from the Galaxy series was mounted to mark the path leading from the entrance to the restaurant.
Some recessed LED lighting fixtures from the Atlas series were chosen for the garden. They have the role of discretely marking the alleys.
To establish and complete this cottage lighting project, we followed some steps. Thus, we made sure that everything turned out to the customer’s liking.
Being a more special project with many organic structures which were difficult to build in 3D, several site visits were required. We familiarized ourselves with the arrangement of the facade, but also of the exterior areas of the cabin. We identified key features such as overhanging roots, grand entrance, log facade and any unique architectural elements that were worth highlighting.
We divided the outdoor space into different zones according to their functions and lighting requirements. Common areas include pathways, entryways, seating areas, landscape features and accent areas.
We have selected lighting fixtures that match the style of the chalet, being also suitable for outdoor use.
Implementing lighting layers is key to creating depth and visual interest. These layers include general, task (functional) and accent (decorative) lighting.
We highlighted the unique features of the chalet, such as architecture, stone, and distinctive landscaping. This can create a focal point and add character to the lighting design.
Choosing the right colour temperature for your lighting is one of the most important factors that determine the final look. Warmer tones (around 2700K to 3000K) can create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, while cooler tones (around 4000K) can enhance security and visibility. But for this kind of project, the choice was definitely warm white. It creates a welcoming, cosy atmosphere. Moreover, it highlights the colour of the wood.
We chose LED lighting fixtures to avoid replacing light bulbs.
Remember, the purpose of outdoor lighting is to create a harmonious blend of aesthetics, safety and functionality that enhances the overall outdoor experience of the challet.
